Throws, grips and discipline rooted in the traditional art.
Overview
Kids Judo introduces young athletes to the traditional Japanese martial art of throws, pins and controlled falls — building coordination, balance and body awareness in a safe, structured class.
Beyond the physical skills, Judo instills the values the sport was built on: respect, discipline and self-control, both on the mat and off it.
The first thing any Judo class teaches is how to fall. Before a child throws anyone they spend weeks learning to hit the mat safely — how to slap out, tuck the chin, spread the impact. It is the least glamorous part of the sport and comfortably the most useful, and it does not stay on the mat: children who know how to fall get hurt less on playgrounds, bikes and stairs.
After that it becomes a puzzle about grips and balance. A throw only works when your opponent is already off balance, which means the real skill is setting that up rather than being stronger. That is a good lesson for a small child in a room that contains bigger ones. Two sessions run each week.
Why train Kids Judo
Weeks of breakfall practice before anything else. The single most transferable physical skill on this page, and it applies well outside the gym.
A throw is set up, not forced. Being the smaller child in the room stops being the disadvantage it looks like.
Bowing on, bowing off, and a fixed way of behaving with a partner. The structure is the lesson as much as the technique is.
Constant negotiation with grip, weight and footing — the sort of coordination that shows up in every other sport they try.
Weekly schedule
2 sessions a week, pulled live from the full timetable so this page cannot fall out of date. Nothing needs booking and there is no term to join — if it is on the grid, turn up.
